Speak novice with personal experience - How to make Taobao from scratch under the new rules

Taobao has become a huge phenomenon, and even though the working life is not as intense as before, I believe more and more people will be drawn into it. Like me, I jumped in with full enthusiasm, ready to take on this powerful business battlefield.

History often repeats itself. Years ago, the term "going to sea" was popular, and now it's "entering Amoy." Those who first went to sea became the wealthy second-generation parents, while those who entered Amoy today are now the new generation of successful entrepreneurs. Will those following behind also succeed? It’s the same burning passion, knowing that the sweat and tears of the pioneers always come first.

With the rule changes in 7.8, many sellers were left behind, some even failed. But I joined Taobao’s sales force after that. Whether you call it a cup or a wash, history will remember. I only believe in what Fu Xi once said: everything cycles, and the difference between good and bad is just a matter of being at the front line.

I chose women's clothing, specifically authentic ones. Taobao’s fast-paced environment, filled with counterfeit products and low-quality items, made me realize that only those who truly understand the industry and are committed to quality can survive. The top-selling women's brands on Taobao are the real winners.

You might wonder how I plan to compete with the big players. I just want to focus on selling genuine products, relying on quality and service to drive traffic. Some may say, “That’s easy to say, but how do you stand against the giants?” Well, I didn’t know anything about women’s fashion when I started. I had no idea where to source products, and I hadn’t even logged into Taobao’s backend. My initial investment was just 10,000 yuan, and I was completely alone.

So, how did I start? Finding the right supplier was my first step. I had four options: either work with an OEM factory to create my own brand, buy from a factory and resell under my label, go to a wholesale market and pick out items, or act as an online agent for a brand. With only 10,000 yuan, which option should I choose? Only two or three seemed feasible.

Option one: Wholesale markets couldn’t offer me a good price because of the small order size. Option two: If I wanted to run promotions, the supply from the market wouldn’t be enough. And if I didn’t promote, I’d just buy a few pieces at a time, which wasn’t efficient. Option three: Who would help me manage the shop? Option four: Most importantly, getting brand authorization was tough, and Taobao is full of infringement issues.

For option four, acting as an online agent, there were hundreds of others selling the same product. Half of the profit would go to the middleman, and I’d be left with little. Some agents required prepayment, which was risky. I realized that the most common way to start on Taobao was through forums, reading real-life experiences, and learning from others.

One conversation I came across was about choosing the right agent. Someone asked if they should look for direct factory shipments in Shanghai, and another warned about hidden traps. They mentioned that even though prepayments were avoided on paper, many agents used them in practice. This led to multiple layers of middlemen, making it hard to trust. However, prepayment could also serve as a test of commitment and help filter out unreliable sellers.

After researching, I visited several companies in Guangzhou and finally found a professional brand that accepted prepayments. I stayed with them until I left Taobao. Now, the next challenge was driving traffic. There are countless posts on this topic, but the key is to create popular products that attract visitors. I focused on optimizing titles, images, and descriptions to make my listings stand out.

I also invested in the Express Train (Taobao’s advertising tool) and studied the data closely. I adjusted my strategy based on time, location, and keywords. I participated in various activities and tried free promotion methods like forum posts, but I found them too time-consuming. Google AdWords wasn’t effective for me, so I stuck with the Express Train.

After six months of effort, I never cheated, and I spent the remaining 9,500 yuan on promotions. The next step was customer service. Keeping customers engaged was a big challenge. I believed in creating urgency—making buyers feel that the products would sell out quickly. People tend to trust what others are buying, so I emphasized authenticity and quality.

I also introduced Taobao Loans, which helped customers who needed to purchase urgently. These tools made the shopping experience smoother. Overall, my journey wasn’t easy, but I remained passionate and determined. While I may not have been the most successful, I’ve learned a lot along the way.

If you're a beginner looking to start on Taobao, I hope my experience helps. I’m currently managing a Yueyue brand clothing store, handling both physical and online agency investments. It’s a more professional brand than the one I previously worked with. If you’re interested in becoming a Taobao agent or want to discuss e-commerce strategies, feel free to reach out.
