Taobao has become a huge phenomenon, and even though working life isn't dead, I believe more and more people will be drawn in, just like me, full of enthusiasm diving into this powerful business battlefield.
History often repeats itself—years ago, the term "going to sea" was popular, and now it's "entering Taobao." The first batch of those who went to sea became the "rich second generation," while today's "Taobao pioneers" are becoming the new leaders in e-commerce. People following behind have the same burning passion, but they also know that the sweat and tears of those who came before them were no small price.
With the changes in rules, many sellers were left behind, some even failed. But I joined the Taobao sales force after that. Whether it's a cup or a wash, history is watching. I still believe in the old saying: everything cycles, and the difference between good and bad is just a matter of being on the front line.
I chose to sell women's clothing, specifically genuine products. Through my experience, I learned that the industry is constantly changing, and those involved in counterfeit goods or low-quality items will eventually be pushed out. The top-selling women's clothing brands on Taobao are the ones that survive.
Some may say, "You talk about it, but how can you compete with the big players?" Well, I didn’t know anything about women’s fashion when I started. I had no idea where to source products, and I hadn’t even logged into Taobao’s backend once. My initial investment was only 10,000 yuan, and I was doing it all alone.
So, how did I do it? The first step was finding authentic sources. I had four options:
1. Work with an OEM factory to create my own brand.
2. Purchase from a factory and resell under my own label.
3. Go to a wholesale market and pick out what I liked.
4. Become an online agent for a brand and handle sales and shipping myself.
With only 10,000 yuan, I couldn’t afford to go the traditional route. The third and fourth options seemed most feasible, but each had its challenges. Wholesalers wouldn’t give me a good price because of my small order size. If I wanted to promote, I needed a large volume, which wasn’t possible. And without proper support, managing the shop was difficult.
Choosing an online agent also came with risks. Many agents were untrustworthy, and prepayment was common. Some even scammed buyers. I found a forum post where someone shared their experience of choosing a reliable agent. They emphasized checking for direct factory shipments and avoiding middlemen. It was a real eye-opener.
After researching and visiting several companies in Guangzhou, I finally found a professional brand that accepted advance payments. I stuck with them until I left Taobao.
Now, the next challenge was driving traffic. There are countless posts on this topic, but the key is to create popular products that attract attention. I focused heavily on the Express Train (a Taobao advertising tool), customizing product titles to avoid competition. I studied the data carefully, analyzing which keywords, times, and cities generated the best results.
I also participated in various promotions and activities, always keeping costs reasonable. While free methods like forums and groups can work, I found that time invested was more expensive than money. Google Ads didn’t perform as well as the Express Train, so I stuck to what worked.
Over six months, I spent nearly all my remaining 9,500 yuan on promotion, without using any unethical tactics.
The final step was customer service. Keeping customers engaged was crucial. I made sure they felt the products were limited and in demand. I emphasized quality and authenticity, and even used Taobao Loans for customers who needed extra time to pay.
This is my story for beginners. Veterans might not care, but I hope my experience helps. History will judge my success or failure, but for now, I’m still passionate. By the way, I’m now looking for partners to join my Yueyue brand clothing store. We’re a more professional women’s clothing brand than the one I previously represented.
