camelia’s belgravia dress

Camelia crafted a breathtaking floral Belgravia Knit Dress with a modified 3/4-length sleeve. As a valued member of our Advisors Circle, Camelia has always been known for creating stunning pieces from Liesl + Co. patterns, and this dress is no different. She graciously agreed to share her experience with us.

The Belgravia Knit Dress absolutely stole my heart the moment I saw it! It's exactly the kind of dress I dream of making, so it immediately climbed to the top of my sewing priority list.

This wrap-tie floral dress pattern is easy to sew and to wear.

As Liesl mentioned in her pattern launch post, there’s a bit of extra room around the bust area. Given my knowledge of standard adjustments, I decided to skip the test garment phase—though I must admit, this isn’t something I’d recommend for everyone. For my measurements, I began with a size 10 for the shoulders and waist, size 12 for the bust, and size 8 for the hips. My usual adjustments included a 1/2-inch narrow shoulder tweak and a 3/4-inch swayback fix.

I also opted to shorten the sleeves to 3/4 length, which gave the dress a slightly more casual yet elegant vibe.

The fabric I chose was a soft, medium-weight cotton jersey weighing 6.5 oz (220 gsm), which worked beautifully for this project. Cutting the pieces was straightforward, though the fabric did curl at the edges—a common issue with this type of jersey. To ensure a polished look, I used a bit more fabric than usual to avoid placing large floral motifs or birds in conspicuous areas.

The majority of the seams were stitched using my serger, except for the front seam, which I completed with my sewing machine. One minor customization I made was to bind the neckline with a strip of fabric instead of folding it under and stitching it in place.

I finished the hem with my coverstitch machine, which handled the fabric beautifully and provided a professional edge finish.

This pattern is simply divine, and I adore the final result. While the front wrap/ties may not be as prominent as I hoped, having the fit perfected means I can confidently sew more of these dresses in the future. It’s such a versatile pattern!
