camelia’s belgravia dress

Camelia crafted a breathtaking floral Belgravia Knit Dress with a 3/4-length sleeve variation. As a valued member of our Advisors Circle, Camelia has been creating stunning pieces using Liesl + Co. patterns, and this dress is no different. Here's what she has to say about it.

The Belgravia Knit Dress immediately caught my eye! It's exactly the kind of dress I adore, so it quickly climbed to the top of my "to sew" list.

This wrap-tie floral dress pattern is easy to sew and to wear.

As Liesl mentioned in her pattern release post, there’s a bit of extra room around the bust area. Given that I’m familiar with the adjustments I typically need to make, I decided to skip the test garment (though I wouldn't recommend this approach for everyone). For my measurements, I began with a size 10 for the shoulders and waist, size 12 for the bust, and size 8 for the hips. My usual pattern modifications included a 1/2-inch narrow shoulder adjustment and a 3/4-inch swayback adjustment.

In addition, I opted to create the sleeves at 3/4 length.

The fabric I chose is a 6.5-ounce (220 gsm) cotton jersey, which worked beautifully for this dress. Cutting the pieces with my rotary cutter was straightforward, though the jersey's tendency to curl at the edges did present a minor challenge. Additionally, I used slightly more fabric than usual since I wanted to avoid placing large flowers or distinct motifs in prominent areas, even though I didn’t aim for perfect matching.

Most of the seams were stitched with my serger, except for the front seam, which I sewed using my sewing machine. One small tweak I made was to bind the neckline with a strip of fabric rather than folding it over and stitching it in place.

The hem was completed using my coverstitch machine, which handled the fabric effortlessly.

This pattern is absolutely stunning, and I couldn’t be happier with how the dress turned out. While I wish the front wrap/ties were more prominent, having the pattern perfectly fitted means I can make countless versions of this dress. And who knows? Maybe future iterations will highlight those details even better.
